University Of North Alabama To Host Steaming Into Alabama's Bicentennial History

TUSCUMBIA, Ala.-The University of North Alabama's Department of Elementary Educationwill hostSTEAMing into Alabama's Bicentennial HistoryFriday, April 27, 2018, at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art in Tuscumbia.
This free professional development opportunity for K-6 teachers is co-sponsored by Alabama Humanities Foundation, the state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Northwest Alabama Reading Council, the local affiliate of the Alabama and International Literacy Associations.
Alabama's Bicentennial history will be presented during this hands-on STEAM workshop, which will include visits to Ivy Green, Tuscumbia's Historic Railroad Depot and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.
During lunch, author Darren Butler will share strategies for turning Alabama's history into innovative writing opportunities for elementary students. In the afternoon, AMSTI and UNA's departments of Geography, Public History and Elementary Education will present hands-on STEAM sessions.
"Alabama has a rich and important history," said Dr. Lorie Johnson, assistant professor of Elementary Education at UNA. "We are delighted to receive support from the Alabama Humanities Foundation to help us tell our state's bicentennial story and offer innovative strategies for elementary teachers to integrate our rich history into their classrooms."
