FLORENCE, Ala. - A University of North Alabama art exhibition is on display in the Visual Arts Gallery until Dec. 9, where 12 graduating art students are presenting their original works in a professional setting. For the first time starting this semester, the UNA Department of Art is requiring graduating seniors of all art concentrations to take part in a mandatory exhibition to complete their undergraduate degrees. Department chair Chiong-Yiao Chen said the department hopes to prepare UNA seniors for graduation by allowing them to gain experience from a student exhibition. "This is a way to demonstrate to the public their accomplishments and creative abilities," Chen said. "It is also an incentive for [seniors] to create artwork on their own outside of the class structure." Chen said the 12 graduating seniors are required to display four to five original works with a thematically coherent theme of a medium of their own choice in the exhibition. Department faculty evaluate each student's performance, which is also accompanied by a digital portfolio. The UNA Visual Arts Gallery is located on the second floor of the Visual Arts Building and offers free admission from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The 12 graduating seniors whose works are on display are: Frances Adams, of Florence Keisuke Banzashi, of Japan Beverly Bobo, of Waterloo Brianna Bolden, of Birmingham Christopher Hughes, of Florence Kento Kawakami, of Japan Elizabeth Miller, of Florence Ayumi Murahashi, of Kisarazu-shi, Chiba-ken, Japan Masashi Ohata, of Chiba, Japan David Sercel, of Lawrenceburg, Tenn.
